Jesse Clegg tells us about his SXSW Music Festival gig in the US

Cape Town – Local muso Jesse Clegg announced on Tuesday that he is set to perform at the SXSW Music Festival in the US.

Taking to his Facebook page, he said: "Very excited to announce that I will be performing 2 shows at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas in March!"

For those who don’t know, the SXSW Music Festival is one of the largest and most influential global music industry events of the year, taking place from 10-19 March in Austin, Texas.

Channel24 reached out to Jesse for a quick chat about the gig:

How did it all come about?

SXSW selects the artists. I've been touring in the states for a number of years now, but SX has always been on my radar. I was fortunate to be selected as one of their official artists this year.

Are you excited?

Absolutely! It's a great opportunity and I really enjoy playing in the states. I'm psyched to be going back to play more shows there and SXSW is an awesome festival with an amazing history.

Will you be doing any other shows in the US while you are there?

I will be going up specifically for SXSW festival but we've had a few more enquiries for shows around that time in nearby states. When they are confirmed I'll announce them on my website.

In February, Channel24 reported that another local band, Diamond Thug, has been chosen as one of three acts to play a set at the SXSW Music Festival.

The band entered the All Roads Lead To Austin competition run by backpack and luggage brand, Jansport. Through the competition, Jansport shortlisted nine bands from around the world.

Diamond Thug were the only South African band amongst entrants from the US, Philippines, Canada, Peru and Argentina. And they’ve been selected as one of the three winning bands in the competition who receive shows at the prestigious SXSW festival.

The band launched a crowd-funding campaign at the beginning of February to raise money for them to be able to get to Austin to play the festival. And as of Tuesday, they only have $805 (R10 477) left to reach their target.
