LEGENDARY boxing champion, Dingaan Thobela has died.

Dingaan, who was popularly known as the Rose of Soweto, died at his home in Joburg on Monday, 29 April. He was 57.

According to reports, he was discovered in his Joburg residence following a period of illness.

Dingaan's childhood friend, Eddie Mutungutungu confirmed his death to Sowetan after many attempts to contact him were unsuccessful.

"He was strangely unavailable on his mobile and his family, accompanied by the police, managed to gain access to his place of residence and discovered he had died," said Eddie.

The former professional boxer from Chiawelo, Soweto won the hearts of many between 1990 and 2006, becoming world champion in two weight classes, holding the WBO lightweight title from 1990 to 1992, the WBA lightweight title in 1993, and the WBC super-middleweight title in 2000.
