Cassius Mailula's agent, Karabo Tshabuse, has clarified Toronto FC's decision and the technicality of sending the former Mamelodi Sundowns star 'on loan' to their reserve team.

A few days after Mailula got his first start and goal for Toronto, the Major League Soccer outfit made a surprising statement that the 22-year old had been sent out 'on loan' to their reserve side.

"Toronto FC announced today (Sunday, 28 April) that the club has loaned forward Cassius Mailula to Toronto FC II," read the statement.

"Toronto FC retains the right to recall the player at any time during the MLS regular season."

The MLS has different rules strange to most fans following European football and, in particular in South Africa.

For example, they have a loan window period, during their winter break, that allows a player to join any club for the duration of the break and return to his parent club afterwards.

According to the 22-year-old's agent, Tshabuse of P Management Sports, the decision to send her client on loan is nothing more than for the Sundowns academy graduate to get more game-time.

Tshabuse explained, exclusively to KickOff, that it's a similar arrangement to the DStv Diski Challenge in the PSL and Toronto are just aiming to give Mailula more minutes.

"It's a similar concept, in what I understand, with the DDC, so it's just for him to get minutes and game-time," Tshabuse explained.

"But he would still play for the first team and also train with the second team and get game-time, where it doesn't conflict with the reserve team schedule. So, it's a similar concept."

After his first goal for Toronto in their 5-0 win over Simcoe County Rovers, South Africans were looking forward to Mailula featuring more for the first team.

However, Tshabuse revealed that the pint-sized attacker would still have opportunities to play in the first team.

"It's just that he has two playing cards basically, so he could feature in two streams," she added.
