Multiple sources told the publication the couple are on a "break".
"They are having a break right now because they needed it. It was a bad situation with a lot of disagreements," said one source. "They both agreed it's better to spend time apart."
The source close to Miley echoed her rep's words when she confirmed the rumours of their separation on Saturday.
"Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers," she said.
"They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart."
The couple has had an on-again, off-again relationship since they first met on the set of The Last Song in 2010, so when speaking to PEOPLE, the insider said, "This doesn't mean their relationship is completely over.
"There is absolutely hope that they will get back together again," she commented.
With their history, they could very well. We've got our fingers – and our toes – crossed!
