Paul Walker's mom recalls his final hours

Cape Town – Paul Walker almost didn’t make it to the event that led to his death.

The Fast and the Furious actor died in a tragic car accident after attending a charity event for his organisation Reach Out Worldwide in 2013.

His mother, Cheryl has now revealed that he originally forgot about the event and that he got a text message reminding him of it.

On the morning of his death, Paul was in good spirits and made plans with his 15-year-old daughter to buy and decorate a Christmas tree in the evening.

“We were having this good conversation, and he’d forgotten about an event he had. He got a text and said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m supposed to be somewhere!’,” says Cheryl according to People.

Little did she know that as he rushed out the door it would be the last time she spoke to her son.

Hours later the car he was travelling in with his friend Roger Rodas slammed into a tree and caught fire, killing them both.

In the interview with the publication Cheryl says that while a lot of people think he was just a movie star who died in an accident, Paul was more than that.

To keep Paul’s memory alive the family visit Huntington Beach, where he loved to surf every year on his birthday, to throw flowers into the ocean and share their favourite memories of him.

“I’ve gotten letters from people all over the world who said he made a difference in their lives. That is such a blessing. He’s never forgotten,” says Cheryl.

A documentary, I Am Paul Walker takes an intimate look into the life of the beloved actor.

It was directed by Adrian Buitenhuis (I Am Heath Ledger, I Am Sam Kinison) and will air in the US on 11 August on the Paramount Network.
