There is only so much one can do during lockdown and watching movies/series is at the top of most people’s lists.

Netflix has decided to respond to the cries of many South Africans by bringing back local drama series and movies.

Netflix South Africa announced on Instagram that it will be adding Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema to its platform. Directed by Ralph Ziman, the 2008 film stars the likes of Rapulana Seiphemo, Jeffrey Zekele and Ronnie Nyakale.

Jerusalema is set in early post-apartheid and follows the story of Lucky Kunene who goes from hijacking cars to hijacking buildings from landlords in Johannesburg. The film will be made available on Netflix from Friday 1 May.

On Tuesday 5 May, Netflix will stream another classic local drama series, Intersexions.

The award-winning series will make a much-anticipated comeback. The series first aired in 2010 and a decade later, it is used as a reference for everyday conversations and university courses. Intersexions highlights how inter-relationships between sexual partners causes HIV to spread rapidly. Season 2 of the drama series will be made available from Tuesday 12 May

The 2009 social issue drama Hopeville is already up on the streaming platform. The film tells a story of an estranged father-son relationship where the father, Amos, tries to restore a public swimming pool. However, he is met with resistance from the community that he just moved into. In the end, he is triumphant through the positive impact he has on the community.

At the beginning of February, the streaming platform announced that it will be making a number of local classics available for streaming. From Tsotsi to iNumber Number and Kalushi to name a few.
