As part of The South African government's efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus, the Standard Bank Art Gallery closed its doors, temporarily on Thursday, 19 March 2020.

It is one of the museums and spaces across the globe that have announced temporary closures, from the Vatican Museums and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Smithsonian Museums, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art among many others.

The virus, gripping the world, is spread through close contact and lives on surfaces, so closing spaces is a necessary measure, but it has left people bereft of the experience of exploring the famous venue.

But now – with a virtual tour – art lovers can see all that the gallery has to offer. In a tweet, The Standard Bank Art Gallery, said: "The Standard Bank Gallery will be closed from 19 March until further notice. This is in the wake of the growing #COVID19 infection risk. To view our current exhibition, #LumieresDAfriques."
