EVERY storyline in a soapie or TV drama focuses on the villain, hero and the beauty queen. But sometimes it’s the silly and funny character who bring life to the show and keep viewers not only entertained, but talking about the character.

MREKZA

Generations – The Legacy’s Mrekza, portrayed by Kope Makgae, is a gangster who is always up to no good, but has a soft side. There is something humorous about the way he talks and portrays his character. His girlfriend, Lucy, played by Manaka Ranaka, brings out the very best in him.

BRUTUS

Brutus from Mzansi Magic's The Queen is known for always having a glass of whiskey in his hand, a toothpick in his mouth and a gun on his hip. Brutus, played by Themba Ndaba, is a character hard not to love. He constantly encourages his nephew, Shaka, played by SK Khoza, to be promiscuous and stop crying over women. The homophobic man almost had a nervous breakdown a few weeks ago when he discovered his very own son is gay.

PETRONELLA

Also on The Queen is Petronella, the nosey hilarious domestic worker who is incredibly funny. Portrayed by Thembsie Matu, her body language, facial expressions and hand gestures will make you laugh hard regardless of how serious she is. She sometimes turns on her madam Gracious, who often reminds her she is the cleaner and not the madam. She knows the Mabuza family affairs well and never forgets to chip in or give her two cents’ worth of input in private family matters.

MORONGWA

Played by Soso Rangqu, Morongwa on SABC 3’s Isidingo oozes drama. She comes from a poor background, starting off as a waitress at Georgie Zamdela’s shebeen and later being made in charge of shifts at a hotel. Morongwa is very vocal, free spirited and lets no one walk all over her. Early in the year, she interrupted a Valentine’s Day ball and caused a big scene in front of guests and even teased the dreaded Barker Haines. She is sometimes loose on the tongue and gives personal information freely without being cautious of her surroundings.

JAFTA

When you speak about a straight talker, it is hard not to mention Jafta from Rhythm City. He is played by Sandile Dlamini. Earlier in the year, his alleged son took him out for lunch in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg and the proud father kept the slip to show off to his friend just how much his son spent on him. He went on about how many beers he could’ve bought with the money his son spent on one plate of food.

MANDLA

Mandla ‘Gatsheni’ Ndlovu is a trouble-maker on Isibaya, yet fans cannot get enough of the humorous man. Gatsheni, played by Bongani Gumede, is lazy and quick to give instructions to everyone, but will not lift a finger. He will do anything for money and sees guns as toys.
