3 November marks the birthday of one of South Africa’s most iconic singers, Brenda Fassie.

MaBrr would have been turning 54 years old this year.

The singer died at the age of 39 at Sunninghill Hospital on 9 May 2004 after overdosing on cocaine. It’s been fourteen years since the bold and fearless singer passed away and fans still enjoy her everlasting music.

In her honour Drum has compiled a list of five of her most popular tracks for you to enjoy.

Weekend Special

Her first recording with the Big Dudes was’ Weekend Special’ and it gained them international status and remains one of her most popular songs.

Vulindlela 

Vulindlela is a celebratory song about a man finally getting married. The song has become a wedding anthem. It was voted Song of the Decade at the South African Music Awards on 26 April 2004, a month after her passing.

Black President

Black President was released in 1990 as a tribute to former president Nelson Mandela. The song tells his life story and his experiences in jail. Mandela was released from jail, and became the first black president of South Africa in 1994.

 Too Late for Mama

This is one of Mabrrr's most touching songs. The success of this song led the singer to start working together with Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala.  They worked on the album Memeza which went platinum in 1989.

Istraight lendaba

This song was released in 1992.
