Felicia Mabuza looks gorgeous on 1970s Drum cover: 'It was the first-ever cover I did'

"The story was about my diverse career experience in the 70s as a reporter for The World Newspaper, my life in showbiz and starting a dance academy for youth that was called Tswelopele Dance Academy. I was extremely involved with trying to keep young people off the streets, using my experience in showbiz and as a ballroom dancer," she tells us.

The shoot happened at Felicia’s home in Dube Village, "which was the first double-storey house in Soweto," she proudly adds. 

There are many things she’ll always remember about being on the cover of this iconic magazine, like following in the footsteps of women she held in high regard.

"It was a dream come true. As I always say, quoting Astronaut Sally Ride, 'You cannot be what you cannot see'. Growing up in Soweto, my role models who graced DRUM covers were Dolly Rathebe, Miriam Makeba, before she left South Africa, Abigail Kubeka, Evelyn Kente and Marina Maponya. I wanted to be like them. Making the cover of DRUM and gracing billboards, was a passage to success for us young girls in the township.” 

But was the shoot any fun? 

"Absolutely! It was the first-ever cover I did, which opened many doors and led to me being featured for other covers, products and services. I even became one of the first black models for LUX Soap, Hanes Pantyhose, Honda, hair products and more. I also graced covers later of many more magazines at home and in the US."

To young people, Felicia says: "Never give up on your dream. No one and nothing should stop you from realizing your dream. Most importantly, stay humble."
