Cape Town - For the 9th consecutive year running, Metro FM’s afternoon drive time radio personality and club DJ, Mo Flava, is set to give-away bursaries to study at Boston Media House once again to students who matriculated in 2017 or 2018.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce that I’ll be giving away bursaries again this year. I will personally conduct the interviews and I look forward to meeting all short-listed candidates,” he told DRUM.
Growing up, Mo Flava’s parents did the best they could to put him through school, but like many young South Africans, he still owed a lot of money to Boston Media House, where he completed his diplomas in radio broadcasting and programming, journalism, as well as media studies.
“By the time I started working, there was already a lot of money that I had to pay back,” he told DRUM.
Over the past eight years, more than 100 students have benefited from the Mo Flava Media Studies Bursary, and Mo Flava tries to keep in touch with as many as he can.
“I mean, they always call and text me to give me an update of things are going for them. One young lady sent me her results telling me she did well and passed her second year. In November last year, another one tweeted me to share that she had just written her first article at one of SA’s leading newspapers. Another just graduated and scored a job at Sasol. Even parents call me, thanking me for helping their children out. And that’s what it’s about, really,” he said.
Last year, the bursary scheme funded between 20 to 25 students, including part-time students. “We cover the students’ tuition and textbooks, so that they don’t feel pressure in that regard,” the Soweto-born DJ shared.
Mo Flava has always gotten questions from people who wanted advice on how to break into the industry, “and I’ve always believed that you must master your craft with skills and education in the field you’re interested in. That’s why I started this bursary scheme, because I found that people do want to study, but might necessarily have the funds to do so,” he told DRUM.
The entry mechanic to stand a chance to win a Mo Flava Media Studies bursary at Boston Media House is very simple. Pupils who matriculated in 2017 and 2018 need to WhatsApp their matric results to 081 268 7518.
