VETERAN actor, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, is one of Mzansi’s most esteemed actors and when given a character to play, he does justice to it. Sello, who has always managed to play characters that are powerful, devious and ruthless, surprised many when he was cast as a gay man on Mzansi Magic’s The Queen. He says he only learnt three days before shooting The Queen that he was going to play a gay man.
HE LOVES PLAYING THE GAY GUY
Sello, who has been on the small screens for more than two decades, says it is his first time playing a gay character. He says he had been dying to play a gay character for years after having played varied roles in his acting career. While Sello is proud of how far he has come in the entertainment industry, he says he would have wanted to play this role in his youth days. “When I found out that the character that I was to play was of a gay man, I got excited. I couldn’t wait to see what I could do with the character. I couldn’t wait to bring the character to life,” says the award-winning actor. Sello plays the role of Kgositsile, who is the brother of Harriet Khoza, played by renowned actress Connie Ferguson. “I am enjoying playing the character so much. I feel like I am reborn as an actor. Playing Kgositsile has really rejuvenated my passion for acting. Honestly speaking, it’s exciting and liberating to play the role,” he says. Sello adds that he took it in his stride and didn’t have to do any research to bring Kgositsile to life. He says not only has his character got people talking on social media, but he has had excited fans walk up to him. “I was walking out of a shop one day and to my surprise, someone walked up to me and started demonstrating Kgositsile’s hand gestures,” he says. “I couldn’t help but laugh. That is when I realised that the characters that we play have a huge influence. I am happy that I can use my craft to represent humanity.”
WORKING WITH CONNIE
Many viewers were happy when they heard about Connie and Sello’s big reunion. The two stars played the role of Archie and Karabo Moroka on the popular SABC1 soapie, Generations as onscreen siblings. Sello says he and Connie share a special bond both on and off-screen. “I have worked with Connie before and our working relationship has always been a good one. Since the days of Generations there has never been a day when we were not on speaking terms. On-screen we have great chemistry and we both respect our craft,” he says. “Even off-screen, Connie and myself have a sister and brother relationship. I am grateful that I got another opportunity to work with her.”
