Cape Town - Singer Kelly Khumalo has revealed that she dropped out of school in grade 10.
Speaking on MacG’s podcast Kelly divulged that her strong passion for music is the reason why she dropped out.
"I went to grade 10 briefly and by March I was out of school," she confessed.
The award-winning singer added that she just didn’t like school despite being a smart kid.
"I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t keeping up. I know I’m a smart child but I’m just not happy and I just disappeared," she said.
Her disappearing act didn’t sit well with her mother. "My mom hated me for it. I remember her saying to that you will never be anything. What kind of child that doesn’t want to go to school?"
Kelly also said that it didn’t really bother her nor make her change her mind. And to avoid her mother forcing her to go to school she then decided to runaway from her mother’s house to go live with her step-mom.
"She had an addiction with alcohol. Some days she was nice and some days awful especially when she was drunk," she revealed about her step-mother.
She was away from both school and home for about six months. "I just wanted the dust to die down so they can’t take me back [to school]," she told MacG.
Kelly is not the only celeb who didn’t finish school. Others who did the same include celebrities such as: Media personality Somizi, music producer Prince Kaybee, rapper Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta and even movie star Charlize Theron.
