Girl Interrupted

It's a terribly sad week.

FHM model and Tropika Island of Treasure 5 contestant Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed on Valentine's Day, allegedly by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius.

Reeva's memorial service took place in her hometown of Port Elizabeth today.

Many who worked with her have shared their thoughts, condolences and memories of this 29-year-old blonde beauty.

Even though I am from PE, I didn't know anything about Reeva, except that she was Oscar's girlfriend.

I fear she will never be known for anything else from now on.

At first, the decision to air the launch of the fifth season of Tropika Island of Treasure on Saturday, two days after her death, really irked me. It seemed insensitive and almost predatory. Airing footage of the victim of a high profile murder case is sure to draw viewers, right? 

However, perhaps seeing Reeva as an independent model and TV star - not simply Oscar's girlfriend - will go a long way to establishing her identity and giving her the respect and attention she deserves.

So it would have perhaps been in better taste to postpone the first episode of the show starring Reeva, but airing it can only serve her memory. Her career was really just taking off and now we'll never know what she could have achieved.
