It was late March – as the coronavirus spread exponentially across the globe - when Sam Smith shared a note on social media, informing fans that they would be pushing the 1 May release date of their third album to a later date, and renaming the release, which was originally titled To Die For.

The 27-year-old said in the message: "There will be an album this year, I promise!"

They added: "But until then, I am still going to bring out some new music over the next few months, which I'm incredibly excited about."

It turns out some of the new music Sam was referencing is a collaboration with fellow pop star Demi Lovato! The pair revealed that their new song I'm Ready will be released on Friday, 17 April.

According to Billboard, the single will be released with a video directed by Jora Frantzis, including choreography by Sean Bankhead. Sam and Demi announced the collaboration on their social media platforms on Monday.

The two singers' mutual admiration is well known. Back in 2017, Demi covered Sam's hit song Too Good at Goodbyes at BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Sam saw the cover and expressed how impressed they were tweeting it with the caption: "YES @ddlovato ?? SAAAAAAANG IT."

Demi then replied: "LOVE YOU. And I LOVE your new music!!" Fans then flooded the comments with requests for a collaboration.
