  • The palace advised Meghan Markle not to wear a particular necklace as it "only served to encourage photographers to keep pursuing such images  and new headlines", a new book reveals.
  • The necklace was a gold Maya Brenner chain with the letters "H" and "M" on it.
  • Meghan felt "frustrated and emotional" say royal reporters and co-authors  Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

Shortly after she started dating Prince Harry, Meghan Markle started wearing a gold necklace around her neck that reportedly got her into trouble with the royal family.

The necklace in question was a gold Maya Brenner chain with the letters "H" and "M" on it. Meghan, of course, later revealed her nickname for the Duke of Sussex was "H".

According to royal reporters, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, however, Meghan received a call from the palace advising her not to wear the necklace.

In the latest excerpt of their book - Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family - published by People, they say: "She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images  and new headlines."

The book, which will be published on 22 August, details how Meghan felt in that moment.

The duchess reportedly "said little during the call, choosing instead to simply listen to the counsel".

"But after hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional. While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend's office tell her what kind of jewellery to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much."

"I can't win," Meghan told a friend later, according to the co-authors. "They make out like I'm to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I'm encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message. I don't know what to say. It was only yesterday that people online were saying I look miserable in pictures, because I was trying to just ignore the [photographer]."

The book claims Meghan "felt damned if she did and damned if she didn't".
