Cape Town – Every year since 1979, The Times reader, Tim O'Donovan, has monitored the royal family's activities before revealing who the most hardworking of them all is.

This year, taking over the title from his sister, Princess Anne, is Prince Charles with a total of 521 engagements. Second to the Prince of Wales was the Princess Royal though with 506, with Prince Edward and Prince Andrew coming in at 308 and 274 respectively.

Though the queen has left most of the royal duties to her children as of late, with Prince Philip officially retiring in 2017 and having recently been hospitalised, she still managed to clock close to 300 engagements.

The younger generation of royals may not have had as many engagements – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did 220 and 126 respectively while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex managed 201 and 83 – but they did wrap two very successful tours. Prince William and Duchess Kate completed their "most complex" tour yet when they visited Pakistan in October, while Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan spent ten days touring Botswana, Angola, Malawi and, of course, South Africa.

The youngest of the royals were also hard at work this year. Prince George recently represented his family when he prepared special Christmas puddings at Buckingham Palace in support of The Royal British Legion's 'Together at Christmas' initiative. Then there's Master Archie, who the world got to see for the first time in months when he visited Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town, South Africa.
