All these options but can’t decide which show to watch? Me neither – and this is why

Health24 Editor, Bevan Lakay is looking for a new series to get into so far, all the shows he has tried is missing this one important ingredient...

In the time where I’m not trying to stay on top of all things coronavirus, I’ll generally find a series to watch just to switch off a bit – I say a bit because I do like to invest in what I’m watching as well.

Tiger King in all its over-the-top real-life ridiculousness sustained me for a while, and you may have read how I wrote that it may be the great connector for all of us in this time of isolation and distancing.

But finding something to watch isn’t always easy for me, while I have the odd staple – I have been watching Grey’s Anatomy for all of its 16 seasons (and more on this in a bit), I like to have a few going at the same time.

Despite all the options, there is nothing that is shouting "watch me" at the moment though.

Where the issue arises, is choosing something to watch and then getting into it quickly. Now word-of-mouth is normally a good starting point, getting a recommendation here and there might get you started, or something may catch your eye when one of the streaming services chucks a few "because-you-watched" options your way.

So then I start something… but this is where I am super pedantic. I need to bond with a character within three episodes for the most, or I’m ditching the show.

And it doesn’t even need to be a lead character. Just a character that I have bonded with and will make sure I look out for in every episode.

This is where I go back to the long-running Grey’s Anatomy – now in its 16th season. I recently stopped watching, because the character I identified with in whatever way, has left the show.

Alex Karev, played by Justin Chambers left – and that was it for me. Done. My loyalty is rarely to a show, but to a character.

I have hated many an episode where my character didn’t feature – and this happens often because it isn’t always one of the leads that I follow.

Then you have the widely acclaimed Breaking Bad, a favourite for many. You’ll love it, they said, Walter White played by Bryan Cranston, is such a badass.

By episode three I was done. There was no moment where I thought YES – THAT character is the one.

Maybe I’m too pedantic. Difficult. But this is how I go about finding and watching series.

The search continues.
