Cape Town - Brazilian actress Alice Braga has been confirmed as the latest addition to Elysium, the new science fiction project by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, reports Deadline.
Braga, best known for her roles in City of God and I Am Legend, joins Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and South African actor Sharlto Copley in the futuristic thriller. She is also the second Brazilian actor added to the cast after Wagner Moura was confirmed to be playing a villain in the movie. No information about the character Braga is to play has been released.
Alien planet
The plot of Elysium remains a closely guarded secret. What is known is that it is set 150 years in the future where civilisation is separated according to social class. Blomkamp confirmed that his new movie would not be set in South Africa. Damon reportedly plays an ex-convict in the movie. Foster confirmed at the Cannes Film Festival, where she promoted her new movie The Beaver, that she plays the head of alien planet in Elysium.
Foster also revealed in an interview with Collider that while she has read the Elysium screenplay, she was not allowed to keep a copy of it due to fears that it may be leaked.
Elysium is the second feature film from South Africa-born, Canada-based director Blomkamp whose debut District 9, set in a Johannesburg where aliens have settled in the city and are segregated from humans, garnered four Academy Award nominations.
Elysium has been set for release in March 2013.
