Cape Town - It’s been a busy year for the British royal family, from engagements to public drama.
With 2019 drawing to a close, we look back on the year that was for the royals.
1. Baby Archie is born
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in May this year. The royal couple introduced their bundle of joy a few days later at St George’s Hall, Windsor Castle.
2. Prince Andrew’s crash interview
The Duke of York spoke to the BBC’s Emily Maitlis in a televised interview about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It was reported the prince had sought approval from "higher up", but it was questioned whether the Queen had given her approval for the interview.
3. Prince Philip flipped his car
The Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a shocking car crash near the Sandringham Estate, resulting in him rolling his own vehicle. The prince told police he was "dazzled by the sun".
4. Princess Beatrice got engaged
The young royal and businessman Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi announced their engagement in September. "We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married," the couple said in a statement. "We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness."
5. Prince Charles dragged into art hoax
Just last month British newspapers reported that Prince Charles was at the centre of a huge art scandal. Tony Tetro, an American art forger, claimed he created paintings on loan to the prince, including one in the style of Claude Monet, which was put on display at Dumfries House in Scotland.
6. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle toured Southern Africa
The royal couple kickstarted their Southern African tour in South Africa, before Prince Harry flew to Botswana, Angola, Malawi. While here, the royals danced in Nyanga, visited some of the queen’s young leaders and met up with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was also young Archie’s first official international trip.
7. Prince Louis celebrates one year around the sun
April of this year saw the youngest of the Cambridge royals turn one. To celebrate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released new photos of the cute prince.
8. Princess Charlotte starts school
Strutting across the playground with both her parents and brother, Princess Charlotte was all smiles meeting the head of Thomas’s Battersea on her first day of school. The young royal was dressed to the nines in her uniform and smiled happily as she shook hands with the school head in a pre-school snap.
9. Cambridge and Sussex enjoy a day at Wimbledon
Shutting down rumours of a feud, Kate and Meghan spent time at Wimbledon, enjoying the sights and sounds of tennis together. A source told People the bond between the royal moms is "strengthening" and they were "genuine and sweet together".
10. Meghan meets Queen B
The Duchess of Sussex met Beyoncé at The Lion King premiere in London in July.
